Workshop: Harness Engineering, Teaching Claude Code to Work in Your Project
A coding agent works as well as the environment we build around it. The model is what the vendor trains, and you can't touch it. The harness is everything else: instructions, rules, skills, specs, tests, linters, hooks and reviews. Building it is called harness engineering.
In this live workshop I switch between slides and code to show how to teach Claude Code to work in a real project, with our rules and our checks. We start from the two sides of a harness: feed-forward, what we give the agent before it writes, and feedback, what tells it that it got something wrong.
Then we go through context engineering and spec-driven development (AGENTS.md, rules, skills, a quick look at MCP, and how to write a spec before the agent writes code), and we close with verification and quality gates: the layers that check the agent's work so it can see its own mistakes and fix them.
